Lewis Maxwell was in court on an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge, accused of stabbing his cousin Stephen Steward.
    
According to a criminal complaint, the two got into an argument when Maxwell’s 14-year-old son won a poker game.
    
When Maxwell was giving Steward a ride home, Steward allegedly punched Maxwell’s wife.
    
Deputies say Maxwell pulled into a gas station at Golf Course and Paradise and the fight was on.
    
It ended when Maxwell pulled out a knife, stabbing Steward in the face and stomach.
    
Sunday Maxwell found out his bond was being increased and he was going back to jail.

“So I do have to go into custody, I can lose my job, I cannot afford to lose my job sir?” Maxwell said.

“The allegations based on the complaint are serious enough that I think a higher bond is required,” a judge said,” a judge said. “You are not going to talk about this case.”
    
The judge raised Maxwell’s bond to $25,000.
    
Steward was taken to UNM Hospital and is expected to survive.
    
When he is released he is expected to also face battery charges.

Another Melbourne council has voted to challenge new state government guidelines against charging poker machine venues higher rates by including an increased levy in its draft budget.

Councillors at the City of Moreland recently voted unanimously to include differential rates levied on electronic gaming machine venues in its draft budget for the coming financial year.

It puts the council on a collision course with the government – which introduced new rating guidelines earlier this month to provide councils with clear rules on differential rates.

Moreland is at least the third Melbourne council to challenge the state’s guidelines, with the City of Monash and City of Moonee Valley also including differential rates in their draft budgets.

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell has written to both Monash and Moonee Valley, saying she would seek to prohibit the councils from declaring a rate that did not comply with the new guidelines.

A government spokesman also said the differential rate guidelines would be enforced: »The minister will seek an order from the Governor-in-Council to veto differential rates that are inconsistent with the guidelines.» He said councils that still did not comply would have to appeal against the guidelines in the Supreme Court.

However, Municipal Association of Victoria president Bill McArthur said the new rules »were just guidelines».

Moreland has charged gambling venues higher rates for four years, with the proceeds funding programs to tackle problem gambling. The rate is projected to net the council $140,000 in the next financial year.

In Moreland, gamblers spent more than $69 million at electronic gaming machine venues in the 2011-12 financial year, according to Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation data.

Moreland’s Cr John Kavanagh said the government was »dead wrong» to prevent the council from charging the rate. He said the council would now no longer be able to fund MoreConnect – a support program for recovering gambling addicts.

»This legislation is morally wrong; it is a tragedy that this program is in jeopardy. There is very little councils can do to help problem gamblers in the community – this was one thing we could do. We intend to fight this.»

MoreConnect program co-ordinator and reformed gambling addict, Gabi Byrne, said recovering gamblers would be »left in the lurch» if funding ran dry. MoreConnect aims to help gambling addicts re-engage with the community through group activities.

Ms Byrne said gambling addiction had a »horrendous» effect on the local community. »For recovering addicts, gambling becomes everything they know. They have a big black hole in their lives and that’s what MoreConnect aims to fill.»

Bill Veerman, 68, from Moonee Ponds, is a reformed gambler. He gambled for more than five decades before taking part in MoreConnect and now volunteers with the program.

»Gambling was this all-consuming thing inside of me – there was this constant fear, you’re always on the edge of anxiety,» he said.

Meanwhile Victorian poker machine venues say they are frustrated with the performance of monitor Intralot, and complained that pokies were »going offline» too often, jackpots were hard to pay out and that any problems took too long to resolve.

With the World Series of Poker right around the corner and less than two weeks away, all of the big tournaments series around the world are wrapping up their respective seasons. Last week, the European Poker Tour concluded Season 9 with the completion of the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final, and this week the WSOP Circuit will reach its conclusion in New Orleans for the final stop and National Championship.

Also concluding this week will be Season XI of the World Poker Tour. Back in Las Vegas at Bellagio once again, the prestigious WPT World Championship will once again attract an elite field and crown the biggest champion of the season. With a hefty $25,000 buy-in, only the biggest names and deepest pockets will be out in the mix, making this one of the most exciting events in poker.

On Saturday, the Championship Event kicked off with the first five levels of play. Following the completion of those levels, WPT Champions Club member Will «The Thrill» Failla stood atop the remaining survivors with a leading stack of 276,000 in chips. While Failla’s stack may be the greatest, Jonathan Kamhazi (273,300) and Mike Linster (269,000) aren’t too far behind.

Day 1 Top 10 Chip Counts

Although Failla would finish in the top spot, many of the eyes watching this event were fixated on Marvin Rettenmaier, last year’s WPT World Championship winner. Rettenmaier didn’t buckle under the pressure of defending his title, going on to bag up an impressive 222,000 in chips. That was good enough to finish him in the top 10 for the day, but there’s still plenty of poker left to be played in this tournament.

One of the pots pushed Rettenmaier’s way came at the hands of long time poker professional Ralph Perry. During the last level of the night, Level 5 with the blinds at 400/800/100, Rettenmaier and Perry clashed in a three-bet pot. According to the WPT live updates, Rettenmaier had opened to 1,700 from under the gun before Perry reraised to 5,200 from the hijack seat. Rettenmaier called to see the flop, then check-called a bet of 6,000 from Perry.

The turn added the to the board, and Rettenmaier checked. Perry fired again, making his wager worth 11,000 this time. Rettenmaier called, and the dealer completed the board with the . Following a third check from the defending champ, Perry slid out a bet of 20,000. Rettenmaier tank-called, which proved to be the correct move. Perry tapped the table to signify that Rettenmaier’s call was best before Rettenmaier tabled the . Perry mucked, and Rettenmaier scooped the pot.

While Perry may have lost that hand, he went on to survive the day, which can’t be said for the following players. Jeremy Ausmus, Artem Litvinov, Ben Hamnett, Kevin Eyster, Kai Chang and Tony Gargano all hit the rail Day 1, with both Chang and Gargano falling in the final level of play.

Chang was eliminated by Jean-Noel Thorel with his failed to come from behind against Thorel’s after all the money went in preflop. Shortly thereafter, Gargano was all in preflop with the against current WPT Player of the Year leader Matt Salsberg’s . Like Chang, Gargano failed to come from behind, and he was eliminated.

Several of the notables who advanced to Day 2 include Tom Marchese (208,200), Daniel Negreanu (206,300), Antonio Esfandiari (189,600), Matt Giannetti (188,100), Dan Shak (176,100), Erick Lindgren (149,000), Andy Frankenberger (127,600) and Yevgeniy Timoshenko (120,100).

At the end of the day, 113 players had signed up with 93 advancing. Another five levels of play are on tap for Day 2, and registration will remain open through the end of Level 8, which will be at approximately 5 p.m. PT. Players who have busted out do have the option of firing a second bullet as this event has the option for a single reload. Once inside the casino, Woods quickly lost to an amateur player, but happily stayed throughout the tournament to hob-nob with other other celeb guests — including Mark Cuban, Kid Rock, Mehki Phifer, L.A. Clippers player Chris Paul and many poker pros, with the band Lifehouse performing towards the end of the evening.

The evening was part of the weekend-long Tiger Jam in Vegas, benefiting the Tiger Woods Foundation. Wearing a sexy blue dress during the poker tournament, Vonn was thrilled to be part of the weekend, and took along her sister, Karin Kildow for the festivities. «The girls at Tiger Jam!» she tweeted.

Tucson- Tucsonans lined up in the streets Saturday in support of firefighter health and wellness programs during the 2nd Annual Motorcycle Poker Run.

All proceeds will benefit lifesaving health, safety and cardiac-care programs for area firefighters.
