The Toronto City Council went ahead with a vote Tuesday to kill a casino project proposed for the downtown area that attracted interest from Nevada largest gaming companies.

City Council members voted against the project, despite a move last week by the mayor to take the issue off the table. The special meeting was called by a majority of the council against the objections of the mayor.

The move by Canada’s largest city ends the casino debate. MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment Corp., Las Vegas Sands Corp., and Wynn Resorts Ltd., all pitched ideas for a hotel-casino and entertainment complex in Toronto.

							TORONTO — No dice.

After a less than four-hour debate on the issue, Toronto city council on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a downtown casino.

Mayor Rob Ford, along with a number of his allies, blamed the casino issue’s failure on Premier Kathleen Wynne and the Liberal government.

«This was the government’s idea from the very beginning — we carried the load, we did all the hard work,» he told council.

«It now appears Premier Wynne has chosen to go in a different direction. Which direction that is, we’re not quite sure.

«I don’t know why the premier does not support 10,000 good-paying, union jobs,» he added.

The premier said it was the municipality’s decision, and insisted her government’s modernization plan to help improve slumping Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. revenues in the face of online and cross-border gaming competition was not at risk.

«I have a lot of confidence in the people at OLG to be able to implement this strategy, and, you know, we’re going to be working with them,» she said.

The Wynne government anticipates in its 2013 budget that the OLG will put $2 billion into the provincial treasury this year, up more than $200 million from 2012-13 — even after the firing of the Crown agency’s Chair Paul Godfrey, the subsequent resignation of the entire OLG board and the rejection of a downtown Toronto casino in less than a week.

Ford — who had once been a booster of a downtown Toronto gambling complex — said a casino with a hosting fee that was less than $100 million didn’t address the city’s needs, would make the province richer and was «not in the best interests of Toronto.»

Council voted in favour of Councillor Mike Layton’s motions which opposed the creation of new gambling sites in Toronto and the expansion of existing gaming sites like Woodbine Racetrack.

In a statement released Tuesday, OLG CEO Rod Phillips stressed his provincial agency respected the wishes of all municipal councils.

It is now up to neighbouring municipalities if they want the OLG to bet on them as a casino host.

Last November, after months of campaigning — and millions spent on advertising for and against gambling expansion — Maryland voters decided the allure of live table games at local casinos was too enticing to ignore and Question 7 was approved by a narrow margin.

On a recent Friday night, Maryland Live Casino — the state’s largest and most extravagant casino, located in Hanover — appeared to be reaping the benefits of democracy.

At around 9:30 p.m., the crowded and energized floor offered enough sights and sounds to keep eyes darting in all directions. Towering women in lavish dresses and show-girl style headpieces flashed dazzling smiles as they welcomed customers. An Orioles game played on mounted flatscreen TVs. Burger grease wafted through the air around Bobby’s Burger Palace. And, of course, the sounds of money mostly being lost to live dealers and slot machines alike rang loudest.

You wouldn’t mistake the casino, which opened last June and introduced live table games on April 11, for Atlantic City, but Maryland Live offers an uncommon experience in the area. It’s a $500 million operation that looks every bit the part, and it was refreshing to see so many people of all ages and backgrounds filling the floor.

For the most part, it was a different story last October, when I first visited. Granted, it was a Wednesday night, but the casino floor was decidedly dull. It resembled a state-of-the-art gym with only a few people on some treadmills. Unsurprisingly, the clientele was also noticeably older, which made me wonder: Could a shiny new casino, planted in a congested shopping mall area, catch on with young people without live table games? At the time, it was not a place I imagined returning to with friends.

A month later, the question no longer mattered. And seven months after my first experience, Maryland Live felt like an entirely different place — one that seemed like an attractive alternative for those needing a break from the city’s nightlife scene.

One aspect of the casino was similar on both visits: The Rams Head Center Stage concert hall. Both nights offered free entertainment — two local, rock cover bands — that failed to attract a crowd. The 500-seat venue had approximately 30 people in it last October; on the recent Friday trip, there were 40. Most in attendance were seated, and many looked like they were taking a break from the casino floor. It was sad that the room with the most amplifiers felt like the quietest spot in the whole place. The band, with its constantly straining lead singer, did the stage no favors, and the excellent sound system only highlighted the problem.

There’s a bar tucked in the Center Stage‘s back corner, but there were more people at the bar in front of the venue’s entrance. Bartenders were busy, so it took more than five minutes for someone to notice I was without a drink.

The eight beers on tap are obvious choices: Budweiser, Bud Light, Landshark, Shock Top. Fordham (Annapolis) and Old Dominion (Dover, Del.) are the closest representatives of local brews. It would have been nice to see the Budweiser replaced with a Baltimore beer, or even National Bohemian. The beers were also comically small: The plastic cup holding my $5 Stella Artois was slightly taller than my wallet.

Walking out, it seemed Maryland Live Casino was doing better than fine, at least for a Friday night. The floor was filled, and groups of smiling people were coming in whenever I passed an entrance. The potential for a fun, memorable night is obvious from the moment you enter. Just don’t expect a world-class concert or much bang for your buck at the bar.

But, then again, why would you? This is a casino after all.

Maryland Live Casino

Back story: After four-and-a-half years of planning and construction, the Cordish Cos.’ Maryland Live Casino opened in June 2012. Last November, Maryland voters approved gambling expansion that included live table games. Since then, the casino has performed well: Overall revenue was reportedly up $1.95 million in April from March.

Parking: The casino has a large lot with free parking. There’s also valet service.

Signature drink: The casino lacks options for craft beer and craft cocktails. A small cup of Stella Artois costs $5.

Revel, Atlantic City’s most expensive casino ever, emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. It was built just over a year ago.

The casino announced in February that it would file for bankruptcy, and a judge approved the move last week. The bankruptcy filing has wiped away $1.2 billion of its $1.5 billion in debt. As a result, lenders have been issued an 82-percent ownership stake in the property.

According to the Associated Press/CBS: “The casino is now “singularly focused on attracting guests to the property through an expanding range of amenities and exciting new programming,” said Jeffrey Hartmann, Revel’s interim CEO. He took over leadership of the resort from Kevin DeSanctis, who helped shepherd the project through its tortured construction, during which it ran out of money and lost its major backer, Morgan Stanley. DeSanctis remains with the company in a different capacity.”

Revel posted a $149 million operating loss in the first year it was open. It now has $272 million in debt. It reportedly doesn’t expect to turn a steady profit until next summer.

According to the Associated Press/CBS, Dennis Stogsdill, Revel’s chief restructuring officer, called the bankruptcy court exit “a monumental day for Revel.”

“With a right-sized balance sheet, reduced debt load and improved cash flow, we have emerged from this process stronger and better positioned for success,” he said.

Revel has more than 2,400 slot machines and 130 table games. It will now allow gamblers to smoke in certain parts of the casino. It originally was the city’s only non-smoking gambling joint, though that model didn’t seem to work.

                Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo and St. Regis Mohawk tribal leaders signed an agreement Tuesday to ensure the Mohawks keep their exclusive casino territory in northern New York while paying the state $30 million in gambling proceeds that have been withheld.

The accord also opens the door to negotiations with the state and counties over Mohawk land claims near their reservation along the Canadian border. Talks are expected to start in 10 days. St. Regis Mohawk Chief Ron LaFrance said the focus will be about 5,000 to 7,000 acres east of the reservation where the tribe is running out of space for homes and businesses.

The state agreed to remove the eight-county region from the Cuomo administration’s proposal for three new upstate New York casino resorts, while the tribe agreed to resume paying 25 percent of future gambling revenues to the state, with shares of that again going to Franklin and St. Lawrence counties.

«There’s still other issues to work through,» Cuomo said. «But I think we’re going to get there.»

Another $30 million in state proceeds are being held in an escrow account pending resolution of the land claims.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Hogansburg, established under a 1999 compact with the state, now has more than 1,800 slot machines, table games and a 150-room hotel. A breakaway Mohawk group established slot machines and bingo games at another location without state approval, resulting in the tribe’s withholding of revenues to the state starting in 2010. The state is negotiating some reduction in the St. Regis payment related to the breakaway gambling facility, the governor said.

At the same time, the Cuomo administration has proposed three new upstate casinos, which has helped prompt resolution of ongoing state disputes with the Oneida tribe last week and the Mohawks this week. Oneidas have a casino resort in central New York and have been promised the new ventures won’t go into its exclusive gambling territory while agreeing to share some revenues with the state.

Chief Paul Thompson said that for the St. Regis Mohawks the most important issue is the land claim, and that finances are secondary. «Our community is bursting at the seams. We have like 400 people that are living in Massena because they can’t find land for houses on our territory,» he said.

State Sen. Betty Little, who represents the region, said some of the land in question already has tribal members living there and not paying taxes.

LaFrance said it is mostly abandoned agricultural and farmland adjacent to the reservation. The reservation currently has about 14,000 residents on both the U.S. and Canadian sides.

«We need to diversify our economy. And right now part of that is we just do not have the space to do that,» he said, suggesting some light to medium manufacturing in addition to new housing.

MACAU, 22 May 2013: Casino industry leaders met in the world’s biggest gambling hub of Macau on Tuesday for the Global Gaming Expo Asia, a three-day fair of gambling innovations at the glitzy Venetian Macau hotel.

The largest gaming event in Asia, showcasing the industry’s latest products, services and technologies, opens to the public on Wednesday with machine companies focusing on Asian content.

The gaming sector has boomed in Asia over the past decade, led by the former Portugese colony of Macau which now generates more than six times the gambling revenue of Las Vegas thanks mainly to high-rolling Chinese VIPs.

Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam are also staking their claims to regional market share, with several mega-resorts in the pipeline.

Despite increasing competition from the region, industry leaders remain confident in the gaming future of Macau. Its revenues jumped to a record US$38 billion in 2012 even as the pace of growth slipped from the previous year amid a slowdown in China’s economic boom.

“You’ve got tremendous growth here,” said Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association, which organised the event.

“As new facilities open, more and more people will want to come to see the new facilities… it adds to the dynamism and the attractiveness of Macau,” he said, pointing to a record growth in gaming revenues in March and new casinos opening in the city.

“It depends on the ability of different operators to see who can produce the best product that’s going to appeal to the 60 percent of mainland Chinese who come here, and innovation will determine who the winners are,” he said.

The annual fair, which began in 2007, features a record 130 exhibitors this year who are increasingly modifying their products to appeal to an Asian audience.

“This year the machine companies are taking their Asian content to a new level,” Marcus Prater, executive director of the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers, told AFP.

“Manufacturers have shifted their development to the type of game that appeals to mainland Chinese players,” he said, adding that it was based on feedback from gamers.

Hong Kong-based Richard Huang, a gaming analyst at CLSA brokerage, believes growth for casinos will be limited in the coming years due to slower gains in the VIP segment which accounts for two thirds of the total revenue for Macau’s gaming industry.

“VIP gaming revenue can no longer generate such type of rapid growth, partly because of all the shutdown on corruption that’s happened in China,” Huang told AFP.

The recent Chinese leadership change is “one of the key reasons why” VIP markets are not growing as much as they were 12 to 18 months ago, he added.

“We’re not seeing a collapse in terms of VIP gaming revenue growth. (But) definitely it’s putting a cap on the magnitude of growth in that segment,” said Huang.

The VIP segment in Macau has grown by more than 10% this year so far.

CLSA brokerage is expecting close to US$40 billion in revenues from Macau this year. This would represent a growth rate of approximately 14% for 2013, the same as last year, which saw a drop from 2011′s growth rate of 42%.

Six firms are licensed to operate casinos in Macau, which has boomed since the city liberalised its gaming industry in 2002 and allowed casino giants such as Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts and MGM to set up shop in the city.

Macau, which was handed back to Beijing in 1999, enjoys freedoms not allowed on the mainland. It is the only place in China where casinos are legal.

The Heartland Poker Tour Soaring Eagle Casino $1,650 Main Event concluded on Monday, May 20 at the Soaring Eagle Casino Resort in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The tournament created a $662,280 prize pool after 462 players turned out, including 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Joe Cada. The 25-year-old poker pro made it all the way to the final table, but ultimately fell in fourth place. Meanwhile, Pat Steele of Chelsea, Michigan went on to capture the $155,636 first-place prize.

HPT Soaring Eagle Casino Results

According to the HPT live blog, the first elimination of the final table took place in Level 27 (25,000/50,000/5,000) on Hand #18 when Sai Mudduluru opened for 100,000 under the gun and then called when Phung Ngo moved all in for 575,000 from late position.

Ngo:
Mudduluru:

Ngo, a 36-year-old mechanical engineer from Commerce Township, Michigan, got a little help when the flop gave him the lead with a pair of kings, but Mudduluru did pick up a flush draw. The turn was of no consequence, but the river was as Mudduluru hit his flush to send Ngo home in ninth place.

Unfortunately, Mudduluru’s momentum would be short lived as he was eliminated 10 hands later after his was cracked by the of Rudy Ballard in an all-in confrontation. The beat was especially brutal as the killing stroke came on the river as the board ran out . Mudduluru, a 30-year-old program analyst from Lansing, Michigan, finished in eighth place for $17,882.

The next elimination didn’t occur until Hand #63, which took place in Level 18 (30,000/60,000/10,000), when Mark Davis got his stack in holding the and was ahead of Adam Bacon’s . Unfortunately for Davis, a 44-year-old attorney from Toledo, Ohio, the board ran out , and Bacon’s pair of aces took down the pot. Davis earned $21,789 for his seventh-place finish.

After Cada eliminated Ballard in sixth place on Hand #87, Bacon followed him out the door in fifth. Then, on Hand #128 in Level 20 (50,000/100,000/10,000), it was Cada’s time to go. It happened when Tom Midena moved all in and Cada called off his stack.

Midena:
Cada:

Cada was dominated, and the flop wasn’t particularly helpful as it gave Midena the nut-flush draw. The turn gave Cada an open-ended straight draw, but the river would miss it. With that, the former world champion was sent to the rail in fourth place for $43,710.

“Winning the HPT title would mean a lot,” Cada said, “You play a tournament to win.”

After the last woman standing, Penelope Banhidy, was knocked out in third place, a heads-up battle was set up between Midena, a 23-year-old professional player from Jackson, Michigan, and Steele, who you may recall finished as the third-place finisher in the PokerNews Mid-States Poker Tour Ho-Chunk Main Event back in March for $27,773.

The match was just 22 hands in before a winner was determined. It happened in Level 31 (60,000/120,000/15,000) on Hand #157 of the final table when Steele raised to 260,000 and then called when Midena moved all in.

Steele:
Midena:

Steele got it in good and held as the board ran out . With that, he secured the $155,636 first-place prize while Midena was left with a $96,031 consolation prize for his runner-up performance. Despite falling short of victory, Midena was quick to praise the HPT.

“HPT has been great,” Midena said, “They probably have one of the best structures out there for poker tours.”

The next HPT will take place this weekend at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque in New Mexico, and the Main Event will start May 24.

Toronto city council has overwhelmingly voted no to a massive new downtown
casino, shutting the door on a year-long debate that featured a parade of
ambitious plans and a citizen-led campaign against them.

In an unexpected move, council also rejected plans to expand the gambling
floor at Woodbine Racetrack, a narrow result that left the site’s operator
concerned for its future. However, council went on to vote in favour of pursuing
discussions with the provincial and federal governments to expand the amount of
convention space in the city, news that will be welcomed by those who say
Toronto is lagging behind other North American destinations.

Nick Eaves, chief executive of Woodbine Entertainment Group, which operates
the north Etobicoke site, watched the vote along with about 200 of his workers,
who bussed in to city hall.

In addition to the support from workers, Woodbine had a petition with 10,000
signatures, he said. “For all of that to be unnoticed and to be turned down
today is a real shock,” he said.

Councillor Mike Layton, who led the charge to have the special meeting even
after Mayor Rob Ford declared the casino plan effectively dead last week, put
forward the motion to oppose the downtown site. It passed 40 to 4. Mr. Layton
also asked council to oppose expansion in the area that includes Woodbine, which
passed in a 24-20 vote. Earlier in the meeting Mr. Ford attempted to get support
for a compromise that would see expanded gambling at Woodbine. That motion
failed 13 to 31.

Mr. Eaves said the prospect of a new casino now going to neighbouring Vaughan
or Markham would “severely compromise” Woodbine’s ability to compete. He said he
hopes to work out a deal with the province to keep Woodbine operating.

Oxford Properties Group, which in 2011 acquired the land under the Metro
Toronto Convention Centre’s north building, has been advocating for a casino on
Front Street to help fund the convention centre’s expansion.

Michael Kitt, Oxford’s executive vice-president, said in an interview that
the company supports the city’s decision. He said Oxford was encouraged by the
discussion that arose at Tuesday’s meeting. Council unanimously voted in favour
of pursuing discussions with Queen’s Park and Ottawa to invest in additional
convention space.

“We think that’s an important topic to continue the momentum over the coming
months,” he said.

Tuesday’s highly anticipated casino vote, held at a special meeting called by
a majority of councillors over Mr. Ford’s objections, was overshadowed by recent
allegations the mayor was caught on video smoking crack cocaine.

During the council debate, Mr. Ford – who for months was one of
the casino’s most vocal supporters because of the jobs and revenue he said it
would bring – spoke out against a downtown casino and laid the blame at Premier
Kathleen Wynne’s feet.

“No deal is good enough for this Premier,” Mr. Ford told a packed
council chamber. “She doesn’t want a casino in Toronto. No one knows which
direction she’s going on the gaming file.”

The City of Toronto had originally counted on collecting
$100-million annually for hosting a casino, but that came crashing down after
The Globe and Mail reported that would mean a special deal for Toronto. Ms.
Wynne told the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. to give all municipalities the
same deal, and the new funding formula would see Toronto get a little more than
$53-million a year for the downtown site.

Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts was among those to express interest in Toronto
and, according to city lobbyist records, was the most aggressive of the
potential casino operators.

Alan Feldman, MGM vice-president of public affairs, in a written statement
thanked council for carefully considering the opportunity.

“As we have always said, we only want to operate in a city where we can
partner with the local community,” he wrote. “For this reason, we are excited to
continue the process and remain committed to sharing our vision with a willing
host in the greater Toronto area.”

Mr. Feldman did not respond to an e-mail asking why the casino
pitch didn’t work in Toronto.

Jan Jones, of Caesars Entertainment, which had also expressed
interest, wrote in a statement that she was “disappointed” by the vote, but
respected council’s decision.

Peggy Calvert, one of the founding members of citizens’ group No
Casino Toronto, said she was “delighted” by the result.

“We couldn’t be more ecstatic. … We could only hope way back when
that this would be the outcome,” she said.

Taxpayers currently bear much of the cost of maintaining the casino regulatory regime in NSW, Hospitality Minister George Souris says.

He has introduced legislation to amend the Casino Control Act 1992 to allow a casino supervisory levy to be imposed on the casino operator to help the state government recoup some of the costs.

«There is currently no ongoing levy imposed on the casino to assist in meeting the day to day public costs of maintaining this regulatory system,» Mr Souris said on Wednesday.

«The bill provides for the introduction of a levy to defray these costs and ensure a high degree of oversight and supervision of the casino is maintained.»

Regulating the activities of the Sydney casino is one of the key responsibilities of the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority.

It’s responsible for the licensing of individuals performing sensitive functions at the casino, approval of new games, auditing casino revenue and the monitoring of casino operations on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis through its on-site inspectors.

It also undertakes detailed licence investigations every five years and inquires into specific matters as required.

«Regulatory systems are in place to protect industry integrity and ensure that the operation of the casino is free from criminal influence and also to promote community confidence,» Mr Souris said.

The government hopes to have the new regulations in place for the 2013-14 financial year.

Mr Souris said the levy to be paid by the casino would be adjusted periodically for inflation and to reflect adjustments to the regulatory activities.

milliarder kroner i spillomsetning.

- Nettcasino blir et av de store beina til Norsk Tipping etter hvert. Man

Sport i spill
